When an existing room deserves a closer look
Start here when you already have suitable space, controlled access and facilities support. Assess available electrical capacity, cooling, rack and floor loading, cable routes and maintenance clearances. Record which upgrades would interrupt other operations and whether future expansion can be accommodated.
A room with spare floor space may still need substantial work. NVIDIA's deployment guidance explains how cooling or power constraints can change the number and arrangement of racks. Assess the proposed equipment layout against those constraints.
When a dedicated shelter deserves a closer look
Consider a shelter when suitable internal space is unavailable, separation from existing operations matters, or a dedicated expansion area fits the site strategy. Establish where it can be placed and how power, communications, equipment delivery and maintenance will reach it.
Prefabrication can move some integration work off site. For example, Vertiv describes modular systems with power and thermal infrastructure integrated and tested before delivery. Confirm the integration, factory testing and site installation included in each proposal.
Compare like-for-like project scopes
Ask both options to answer the same questions:
- Readiness: which electrical, cooling, civil and network works are required?
- Schedule: which equipment, approvals or utility dependencies control the start date?
- Operations: who monitors, maintains and supports the installation?
- Expansion: what can be added, and what must be replaced or upgraded?
- Commercial scope: what is included, excluded and still provisional?
Make the decision from evidence
We recommend a short options assessment with a common workload, a documented site baseline and explicit scope boundaries. A shelter should solve a defined deployment need; an existing room should demonstrate that it can support the proposed system.
